A massive explosion at a CNG filling station in the Aushkandi area of Nabiganj upazila early Thursday morning (August 21) left 11 vehicles destroyed and six people critically injured.

The incident took place around 6:00am at the Aushkandi CNG station along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. The fire broke out when gas was being filled into a passenger bus, triggering a powerful explosion that quickly engulfed the station and nearby vehicles.

According to locals, the blast was followed by a loud bang, and flames spread rapidly, burning a passenger bus and 10 CNG-powered auto-rickshaws to ashes.

Shoaib Ahmed, the assistant manager of the station, said he and five others were sleeping on the third floor of the building when the fire broke out. “We woke up to screams and fire. With no way to escape, we jumped from the third floor. The explosion happened while filling the bus,” he said.

Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the Habiganj Fire Service, confirmed that firefighters responded quickly and managed to bring the blaze under control. “A total of 11 vehicles and the entire station were destroyed. All six injured victims were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital,” he said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.
