Explosion while lighting mosquito coils in Savar, couple burnt

A husband and wife were seriously burnt in an explosion in their house while lighting mosquito coils with a gas lighter in Savar. They have been admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka.

The accident took place around 1am in the Majidpur Dighirpar Masjidbari area of ​​Savar on Thursday.

The injured are Md. Kausar, 28, and his wife Ruby Akhter, 24. They work in two local garment factories.

Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said that Kausar's body was 100 percent burnt and Ruby Akhter's body was 88 percent burnt. Their condition is critical.

According to locals, Kausar tried to light a mosquito coil with a gas lighter at night and the lighter exploded with a loud sound. The fire spread throughout the house in an instant and the couple was burnt. Hearing their screams, neighbors rushed to control the fire and rescued them and sent them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Kausar's father, Siman Sheikh, said that his son told him at the hospital that the entire house suddenly caught fire when he lit a gas lighter and the clothes they were wearing were burnt.

He also said that there was no gas connection in the house. However, there is a gas line outside next to the window. He believes that the explosion may have occurred due to gas accumulating somehow from the gas line next to it.

Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Noor Mohammad said that no one has complained to the police station in this regard yet. However, an inquiry is being conducted into the incident.
