Ex-Railway Minister Mojibul Haque sued for murder
Former Railway Minister Mujibul Haque has been named the prime accused in a murder case filed nearly 11 months after the fatal shooting of college student Jamshedur Rahman Miyaji Jewel during a quota reform protest in Chauddagram, Cumilla.
The case was filed on July 1 by the victim's uncle, Md Ayub Miyaji, at Chauddagram Police Station, Hilal Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chauddagram Police Station, confirmed.
"The case names 42 individuals, including local Awami League leaders and activists, and lists 80 unidentified others," the OC said.
According to the case statement, Jamshed, a second-year honours student at Cumilla Government College, was shot on August 5, 2023, during a student protest in Chauddagram. The complaint alleges that armed members of the Awami League, led by Mujibul Haque, attacked the demonstrators, resulting in Jamshed's death.
Among the accused are Upazila Awami League General Secretary Rahmat Ullah Babul, Municipal Chhatra League President Jobayer Hossain Shuvo, and several other leaders of Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Police stated that most of the accused are currently in hiding and that an investigation is underway. Security has been tightened in the area due to rising tensions.
