Ex-Shibir leader Jisan arrested in rape case taken from hospital to court

Jisan Mia, the expelled central leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir, has been produced in court from Cumilla Medical College Hospital after being arrested in a case filed over the rape and forcible abortion of a widow in Daudkandi, Cumilla.

Earlier on Tuesday, a four-member medical board gave its opinion that Jisan was fit to be discharged from the hospital, confirming the matter to Somoy TV. Daudkandi Model Police Station OC Md A. Bari said that after receiving the doctor's clearance, Jisan was being taken to court. He is currently in DB custody at the hospital and will be produced before the relevant court .

Prior to this, to avoid the debate over whether the arrested Jisan was healthy or ill, the hospital authorities formed a four-member medical board on Sunday. The hospital's acting director said that after conducting several tests, the medical board found Jisan to be healthy, and he was released today .

Police say Jisan had a relationship with the widow through Facebook. After the woman became pregnant, Jisan forced her to have an abortion. When she later pressured him to marry her, he went into hiding on the night of June 11, promising to marry her the next day . On Friday night, Jisan was rescued in an unconscious state from Laksham Railway Junction area. That night, the woman filed a case naming Jisan as the main accused and three others for abetting the rape. Since being shown arrested in that case, Jisan had been under police guard at the hospital.

Accused Jisan Mia Pradhan was the central assistant international secretary of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and a former president of the organisation's Cumilla district west branch . He is the son of Shafiqul Islam of Birbag village in Daudkandi upazila.

OC Md A. Bari said that besides Jisan, the three other accused in the case—Sekander Ali, Golam Rabby and Sajib—are already in jail and have confessed to the incident.
