Ex-SP, UNO and police officials face charges in Magura

A case has been filed against nine individuals, including the former Superintendent of Police (SP), Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Magura, for the alleged wrongful arrest, police torture, and unlawful detention of Faisal Ruman, former co-organizing secretary of Magura district Chhatra Dal.

Faisal Ruman filed the case on June 30, accusing the officials of arresting him in a fabricated case, torturing him in custody, and detaining him without trial for 168 days.

According to the complaint, Faisal was arrested on August 18, 2018, by the then UNO Abu Sufian following allegations of posting images on Facebook that were deemed offensive towards Sheikh Hasina and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. After his arrest, Faisal reportedly suffered severe physical torture, resulting in spinal cord and vertebrae injuries.

The accused include former SP Khan Md. Rezaoan, UNO Abu Sufian, OC Md. Sirajul Islam, two sub-inspectors, a constable, and three political activists.

Magura Sadar Executive Magistrate Md. Saiful Islam, after reviewing the complaint, ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter.

Faisal’s lawyer stated that the torture has left his client permanently disabled and called for justice.
