Failure in duties will leave us answerable to future generations: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said that if we fail to perform our duties properly, we will be accountable to future generations.
He made the remarks during a meeting with returning officers and field administration officials ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections and the referendum on Tuesday (December 23).
The CEC said, “We are standing at a crucial juncture in history. You all know the state of the country. It is our responsibility to keep the nation on the right path. The duty placed on the Election Commission at this critical time must be carried out properly.”
Addressing the officials, he added, “If you do not perform well, or fail to do your work, I cannot sleep peacefully. My authority functions only as long as you perform your duties. If you do not work, the entire system fails.”
He further emphasised that maintaining the system is the responsibility of the officials. Urging everyone to work diligently, the CEC said, “We want to prove that we can conduct free and fair elections. This is only possible through the rule of law. If laws, regulations, and procedures are followed, the Election Commission will fully support you.”
