Fair polls will enhance our, students' respect: CU VC
Describing the polls as a “students’ election” and crediting them for creating a peaceful electoral atmosphere, Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Yahya Akhter said all necessary preparations have been made to ensure a fair election. “If the election is fair, it will enhance our honour as well as that of the students,” he said.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting the polling centre at the university’s IT building around 9:30am on Wednesday (15 October).
The Vice-Chancellor added that no obstruction or attack occurred during election campaigning. “Students have conducted their campaigns maintaining discipline and following the rules,” he said.
He also mentioned that a four-tier security system has been put in place for the election.
At that time, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Kamal Uddin was also present. He said, “Our students started queuing from 8am. Voters are being verified carefully to ensure that one person casts only one vote. That’s why although voters gathered by 9am, polling began at 9:30am. All arrangements have been made for students’ convenience, including photo-attached voter lists.”
It is worth mentioning that, after a long wait of 35 years, voting for the seventh Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) and hall council elections is being held today. In this CUCSU election, 415 candidates are contesting for 26 posts, while 493 candidates are competing for 24 posts in hall and hostel councils. The total number of voters stands at 27,516.
