BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday admitted that he personally does not understand proportional representation (PR) and called on political forces to prioritize national unity over division.

Speaking at a public meeting at Gopalpur School Ground in Gareya Union, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila, Fakhrul warned that demands for a referendum and PR could disrupt upcoming elections. “Elections cannot be held without a referendum and PR. By demanding these and organizing rallies, some groups are trying to derail the election,” he said.

He added that discussions on PR should take place in Parliament. “Points on which parties agree will be included in the July charter, and for the remaining points, a referendum will be held. Please resolve political instability through elections. I do not want politics of violence or Hindu-Muslim divisions. I want everyone to live together in peace,” Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader assured that arrangements in the next election would protect everyone’s voting rights. He stressed that BNP believes in democracy, guarantees the rights of all religions, and seeks peace rather than revenge.

Fakhrul also highlighted the harm caused by political divisions in the past and called for collective progress. “The people will form the government through their votes,” he said.

He further promised that if BNP comes to power, one million jobs would be created to combat unemployment.
