Family of late freedom fighter attacked for refusing extortion in Sunamganj
The family of a late freedom fighter has alleged that their house was vandalised and furniture looted in a targeted attack in Islampur village under Jagannathpur upazila, Sunamganj. Family members say they are living in fear following the incident.
According to the family, Raniganj Union Jubo Dal's organisational secretary Nizam Uddin and his associates had been attempting to seize their land for a long time. On August 5, 2024, Nizam Uddin and his accomplices allegedly demanded Tk 500,000 as extortion money.
When the family refused to pay the demanded amount, a group led by Nizam Uddin attacked their house on Sunday afternoon, vandalising the property and looting furniture.
Abdul Gaffar, son of late freedom fighter Abdullah Khan, alleged that there had been attempts to forcibly occupy their family's long-held land. He claimed to possess video footage of the attack.
Jagannathpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Hadi Abdullah said police visited the spot after receiving information. The family's house had been broken into, and police are investigating the incident.
Jubo Dal leader Nizam Uddin denied the allegations, stating, "I did not go to the spot. I have no role in this incident."
