'Family of Pir Shamim doesn’t not want to file any case'
Pir Abdur Rahman alias Shamim was killed after an attack on 'Shamim Babar Darbar Sharif' in Daulatpur of Kushtia, on charges of insulting the Quran.
Police said the incident took place on Saturday afternoon in the Darogar More area of Philipnagar Union.
Police said that no case has been filed yet even though 12 hours have passed since the incident. Kushtia Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jasim Uddin said that if the family of the deceased wants to file a case, the police will take action.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased Shamim said that they do not want to file a case in this connection.
The elder brother of the deceased, Golam Rahman, said, 'We do not understand what to do. My brother is dead. That's all for now. We are very peaceful people. We do not want to file a case because we do not want to get into any trouble.'
However, he did not want to say exactly why he is not interested in filing a case.
Shamim was also accused of hurting religious sentiments in 2021 and had a case against him on various charges, said Daulatpur Police Station OC (Investigation) Sheikh Mohammad Ali Mortuza.
He said, 'I was not at this police station at that time. However, we heard that he had served three months in jail at that time.'
Kushtia Police Superintendent said that a group of local people gathered around Saturday afternoon, alleging insulting the Quran based on a video from three years ago. During this time, they attacked Shamim and two others with country-made weapons.
Later, the three of them were taken to the Daulatpur health complex in injured condition, where Shamim was declared dead.
Some videos of the attack and vandalism were spread in the media and social media.
Police said that even though Shamim died, the excitement of the attackers did not subside at all. Hundreds of people were present in the spot till 5 pm. The vandalism was being carried out in the presence of the police. Later in the evening, the situation was completely under control.
Responding to the question of why the police failed to control the situation, Superintendent of Police Jasim Uddin said, 'There was a terrible anger among the attackers. The police had to hurry to bring hundreds of agitated people under control.'
