A mother and her 18-month-old son died after being hit by a train while returning home after buying new Eid clothes in Narsingdi. The tragedy unfolded in front of the father and daughter.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, May 27, at Narsingdi Railway Station.

The deceased have been identified as Sathi Begum, 27, wife of Sujan Mia of Kararchar area in Shibpur upazila, and their 18-month-old son Safwan Hasen.

Sujan Mia, a day labourer who drives easybikes and works as a mason's assistant, had brought his wife and two children to Narsingdi town for Eid shopping on Wednesday afternoon. After buying new clothes for their children, they were returning home.

While crossing the railway platform, the family was hit by the speeding Cox's Bazar Express train. The mother and son died on the spot. They were taken to Narsingdi District Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

"Tears rolled down my cheeks as I helplessly watched my innocent child and my wife die before my eyes," a grieving Sujan Mia said. "What will I have for the next Eid?"

Railway police said a train was stationary on line No. 1 at the station while the fast-moving Cox's Bazar Express from Cox's Bazar to Dhaka was passing through the station. The family was crossing the tracks when they were hit.
