Faridpur BNP leader expelled after video surfaces online
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled a local leader in Faridpur after an video showing him in a compromising situation with a woman circulated widely on social media, triggering public criticism.
The expelled leader, Md. Obaidur Rahman, served as the organising secretary of Aliabad Union BNP under Faridpur Sadar upazila.
The decision was announced on Thursday night (July 23) in a letter signed by Faridpur District BNP Convener Syed Modarres Ali Isha and Member Secretary AKM Kibria Swapon.
According to the letter, Obaidur Rahman was expelled from the party's primary membership and all organisational responsibilities over allegations of moral misconduct. The district BNP also instructed party leaders and activists at all levels to refrain from maintaining organisational ties with him.
The disciplinary action came after a 5-minute and 37-second video, allegedly showing Obaidur Rahman with a woman in an intimate setting, spread across social media platforms and sparked widespread discussion in the area.
Repeated attempts to contact Obaidur Rahman for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls.
District BNP Convener Syed Modarres Ali Isha said the party took the decision after verifying the authenticity of the circulated video during a district BNP meeting held on Thursday night.
