Farmer dies after seeing paddy submerged in heavy rain
A farmer from Brahmanbaria died after seeing his paddy submerged in heavy rain. The incident took place in the haor area of Rampur village in Goalnagar union of Nasirnagar upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased farmer, Ahad Mia, 55, is a resident of the village. He had borrowed Tk50,000 to plant paddy in his land. He was supposed to harvest the paddy within a few days. But the paddy in the field was submerged in water for three days due to continuous rain. Seeing this situation, he fell ill on the spot and later died.
Doctors believe that he may have died of a heart attack.
Family members said that Ahad Mia collapsed when he went to harvest paddy with his workers on Saturday morning and saw all the land submerged in water.
His elder brother and local UP member Ahmed Hossain said that he fell ill on the spot after seeing the damage to the paddy.
Nephew Faruk Mia said that he could not bear the fact that all the paddy of six bighas of land was submerged in water.
According to the district and upazila agriculture office sources, at least 1,000 hectares of paddy land is submerged in water in the haor area of Nasirnagar. Farmers are harvesting immature paddy due to fear of rotting. A list of about 200 affected farmers has already been made, who will be brought under government assistance.
According to local farmers, the paddy is rotting after being under water for a few days, and many paddy are not yet fully ripe. They fear major losses due to this.
Abu Lal Mia, a farmer from Mahakal Para in Nasirnagar, said that he was able to harvest only five kani of his 20 kani of paddy, the rest of the land is still under water.
Nasirnagar upazila agriculture officer Md. Imran Hossain said that Ahad Mia died while working on the land. A list of the affected farmers has been made and sent to the concerned office and assistance initiatives are being taken.
