A 50-year-old farmer from Chakaria is battling for his life following an alleged botched brain tumour surgery in Chattogram.

Mahabubur Rahman, a resident of Sikolghat in Lokkhyarchar union, had hoped to recover after surgery but is now bedridden, with his condition worsening despite his family spending approximately Tk 14 lakh on treatment, according to relatives.

Following the incident, the victim’s son, Ariful Islam, filed a case at the Chattogram Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on November 24, accusing neurosurgeon Dr Md Ismail Hossain and Parkview Hospital of negligence.

Later, the court has ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to probe the allegations.

According to the complaint and family members, Mahabub was admitted to Parkview Hospital on July 19, 2025, where Dr Ismail diagnosed a brain tumour and warned that surgery was urgently required. The family sold land and borrowed money to arrange funds, eventually spending about Tk 14 lakh across Parkview and Labaid Hospital.

After the operation, the doctor reportedly assured the family that the surgery was successful. However, Mahabub’s condition deteriorated after he returned home. On October 21, he was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where a specialist board found that the tumour remained in place and had grown larger.

The family also alleges that when approached with these findings, the doctor dismissed their concerns.

PBI Inspector Mostafizur Rahman said the case is being investigated with importance, adding that a request has been made to form a medical board to review treatment records. Further legal action will depend on the board’s findings.

Denying the allegations, Dr Ismail said the claims are “completely false,” stating that only the safely removable portion of the tumour was excised to avoid life-threatening risks. He described the allegations as an attempt to damage his professional reputation.

Under Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) regulations, proven medical negligence can lead to licence cancellation, though such enforcement remains rare.

Mahabub’s family, now facing severe financial hardship, is seeking justice and urgent support for his continued treatment.
