BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday (August 1) said that Bangladesh’s liberation will remain incomplete until fascism is fully eradicated from the country’s political landscape.

Speaking at a rally in front of Amir Complex in Azampur, Uttara, organized by Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP to commemorate the martyrs of the July-August uprising, Fakhrul stated, “We may have momentarily escaped the grip of brutal fascism, but true liberation will only come when it is eliminated politically and permanently.”

He reiterated BNP’s firm stance against corruption and authoritarian practices, declaring, “We will not compromise with those who loot public wealth, rob banks, extort citizens, or unlawfully seize property. They must not be allowed to return to power in any form.”

On foreign trade developments, Fakhrul welcomed the U.S. decision to reduce countervailing duties on Bangladeshi exports from 35 percent to 20 percent, calling it “good news for the country.” He credited the interim government, foreign ministry, and relevant advisers for the progress.

“Previously, goods worth Tk 100 were subject to a 35% duty, raising the price to Tk 135. Following discussions, this has now been brought down to 20%, which is a positive step,” he said.

Addressing ongoing political reforms, Fakhrul stated that the Consensus Commission has concluded its latest round of meetings and a full report is expected within days.

He also referred to the London meeting with the interim government’s Chief Adviser, who reportedly confirmed that national elections will be held in February. Fakhrul affirmed BNP’s readiness to participate, saying, “We want these elections.”

He concluded by expressing optimism about the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, stating that he hopes Rahman will soon return to the country to lead and unify the party.
