Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that confronting defeated fascist forces, along with their leaders, activists, and supporters, will be one of the major challenges in the upcoming national parliamentary elections.

Speaking at a press conference at Police Headquarters on Tuesday (September 30), the IGP highlighted the challenges ahead of the polls.

When asked to specify which side is being viewed as a challenge, Alam said; “On August 5, 2024, police had to vacate their stations. Bringing the situation back to its current state within a year was itself a challenge. Our goal now is to build the capacity to conduct a fair and impartial election. We are confident that we can achieve this. I cannot single out any particular group, but the defeated fascist forces remain a challenge for us.”

Responding to concerns over law and order, particularly in Mohammadpur where top criminals and teenage gangs reportedly remain beyond control, the IGP dismissed doubts about police capacity.

“We certainly have the capability to ensure order during the elections. I have no doubt about this, and neither should you,” he asserted.

On the issue of looted police firearms, the police chief admitted that 1,350 weapons have yet to be recovered. “Regular operations to recover the arms are ongoing,” he said.
