Father killed after attack during village arbitration in Shibganj

A man named Anisur Rahman alias Behudla, 60, was killed in an attack on an arbitration meeting at Court Bazar in Shibganj Municipality area of ​​Chapainawabganj. At least four people, including the deceased's son, were injured in the incident.

The incident took place at around 10:45pm on Sunday (March 8).

Chapainawabganj Additional Superintendent of Police ANM Wasim Firoz confirmed the matter.

The deceased Anisur Rahman is the son of the deceased Zafar Ali Mistry of Dewan Jagir village in Shibganj upazila.

According to locals, a dispute arose over an extramarital affair between Anisur Rahman's son Asmaul and a girl. On February 18, a compromise was reached between the two parties through village arbitration. At that time, the son's side was fined Tk 1 lakh 70 thousand and the matter was temporarily settled on the condition of paying Tk 20 thousand in cash.

When both sides sat for mediation again in the Court Bazar area, a clash broke out at one stage of the dispute on Sunday night. It is alleged that people from the women's side attacked Asmaul and his family with country-made weapons and sticks. Anisur Rahman, his brother Mansur Ali and three sons - Rabbikul, Asmaul and Abdul Awal - were injured.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Anisur Rahman dead. Asmaul, among the injured, was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition was critical.

Additional Superintendent of Police ANM Wasim Firoz said that tension spread during the mediation meeting over his son's extramarital affair and at one stage an attack took place. On receiving information, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.

He also said that the process is underway to identify those involved in the incident and bring them to justice as soon as possible.
