A gynaecologist from Cumilla's Maynamati has died in a Dhaka hospital after being infected with dengue.

Dr Fahmida Azim Kakoli, an obstetrician and gynaecologist from Cumilla, passed away around 5:30am on Sunday (November 23) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

Her elder brother, Monjurul Azim Palash, confirmed her death.

According to family members, she developed complications in her kidneys and liver after being diagnosed with dengue. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to Dhaka on Saturday. She was moved from the ICU to a ventilator after her blood pressure dropped sharply. Despite overnight efforts by doctors, she passed away this morning.

Her death has cast a shadow of grief over the medical community in Cumilla. Colleagues and patients remember her as a compassionate doctor who often performed free C-sections for underprivileged women. She was also involved in theatre and loved music and nature.

Her body has been kept at a mortuary. The funeral and burial will take place after her only daughter, Turna, returns from the United States.

Dr Fahmida Azim Kakoli was an assistant professor in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Cumilla Medical College and Hospital in Maynamati. She was also serving as a consultant at Nagar Matrisadan in Cumilla.
