A Class IX student has been accused of slapping and punching a female teacher in the classroom for maintaining discipline at Dr Shawkat Ali Bhuiya High School in Ghatail, Tangail, causing widespread outrage in the area.

The incident occurred on Monday during a confrontation between the teacher and the student over an unspecified issue. When the teacher slapped the student to discipline him, the student retaliated with several slaps and punches, witnesses said. Three other teachers were present in the classroom at the time.

A local arbitration meeting was held on Wednesday to resolve the matter, where it was decided that the student would be expelled and would seek forgiveness by touching the teacher's feet. The student's father, a fourth-grade employee (peon) at the same school, would face further action from the head teacher and the school management committee.

However, the victim teacher expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, stating she would not return to the school. She also alleged that two of her colleagues, Parveen Akhter and Rokia Akhter, had visited her home and threatened her, taking the student's side.

"I will not return to a school where teachers do not respect teachers and students do not respect teachers. I do not want to return to this profession," the teacher said. She requested a transfer to her home district.

Rokia Akhter denied the allegations against her.
