Fire destroys several resorts on St. Martin Island
A devastating fire broke out on St. Martin Island at midnight, destroying several resorts. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The fire started around 2:30am on Tuesday in the Galachipa area on the island's western beach, according to Mujibur Rahman, the chairman of St. Martin Island Union.
He said, "It initially erupted at the Shayari Resort and quickly spread to surrounding resorts. By the time the blaze was controlled, Shayari, Beach Valley, and Kingshuk Resorts had been completely destroyed, with 30 rooms turned into ashes."
Island resident Nur Muhammad described how the fire began at the Shayari Resort and spread to the other resorts. "Upon receiving the alert, the Coast Guard, Navy, Tourist Police, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with local residents, mobilized to bring the fire under control," he said.
Abul Kalam, another local resident, pointed out that the absence of a fire service on the island made it extremely difficult to contain the fire in time. He urged the government to build a fire station to protect both residents and tourists.
Confirming the mattter, Deputy Commander of Teknaf 2 BGB, Major Ishtiaq Ahmed said, The fire was brought under control within an hour and a half, thanks to swift efforts by the local community. However, the cause of the fire is still unknown.
