Fire erupts in Cumilla market, over 100 shops destroyed

A devastating fire broke out at Madhaiya Market in Chandina Upazila of Cumilla around 11.30 pm on Sunday (December 29), engulfing more than a hundred shops. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.

Mohammad Sojib Hossain, a shopkeeper at the market, said, "I witnessed more than a hundred shops burn before my eyes. The shopkeepers affected by this are now helpless, unable to salvage anything."

Md Toufikul Islam Bhuiyan, Assistant Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defense in Cumilla, said, "Six units worked to contain the fire. The cause remains unknown. All the affected properties were businesses, resulting in a substantial financial loss. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries. Further details will be shared following an investigation."

Chandina Upazila Executive Officer Nazia Hossain said, "The authorities will consult with senior officials and offer support to the affected shopkeepers."
