Fire rips through plastic warehouse in Islambagh, 11 units deployed
A major fire broke out at a plastic warehouse in Islambagh of Old Dhaka, on Wednesday afternoon (December 17), prompting a large-scale response from 11 Fire Service and Civil Defence Units.
According to the Fire Service control room, the blaze erupted around 1:30pm. The first firefighting unit reached the scene by 1:50pm and immediately began extinguishing operations.
According to locals, the blaze likely originated in a plastic factory housed within the multistorey building. Due to narrow lanes, fire service vehicles were unable to reach the exact spot, forcing firefighters to draw water through long hoses from the Buriganga River at Islamabagh Chairman Ghat to douse the flames.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly, engulfing the multistorey structure and spreading to adjacent smaller buildings. With flames visible across a wide area, firefighters also poured water from the rooftops and upper floors of nearby buildings in an effort to bring the situation under control.
However, no casualties have been reported so far and the cause of the fire and the extent of damage could not be determined immediately.
