Fire set to freedom fighter’s grave in Shariatpur
A grave of a freedom fighter was set on fire in Niamatpur village of Shariatpur Sadar upazila, with family members alleging that miscreants torched it on Monday night, on the eve of Victory Day.
Local residents said Abdul Mannan Khan, a resident of Niamatpur village under Angaria union of Shariatpur Sadar upazila, took part in the Liberation War in 1971 and fought against the Pakistani occupation forces. He died on January 8, 2010, and was buried beside his family home.
According to the family, miscreants placed wood on the grave and set it on fire under cover of darkness on Monday night.
Abdul Mannan Khan is survived by two sons and two daughters. His wife, Mahfuza Begum, lives in the house with one son and one daughter. She visits her husband’s grave every morning. On Tuesday morning, she found signs of fire on the grave and raised an alarm, prompting other family members to rush to the spot.
His daughter Afroza Akter informed the local administration and freedom fighters about the incident. She said ashes were found on the grave and light smoke was still coming out. The family cannot understand who carried out the act or why, but they are deeply shocked and frightened.
Shariatpur Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Elora Yasmin said she had received information about the incident and would send officials to investigate after Victory Day programmes conclude.
On Tuesday morning, a visit to Niamatpur village found relatives gathered around the grave, with Mahfuza Begum in tears. She said the family and villagers are proud of her husband and she cannot accept such a disgraceful act. The family is observing Victory Day in mourning.
Shariatpur Sadar upazila Freedom Fighters Command Council convenor Abdul Aziz Sikder said the incident was alarming and necessary steps would be taken after discussion.
District administrator Tahsina Begum said she had not yet officially been informed and that necessary measures would be taken after speaking to the superintendent of police.
