The culture of division based on first, second or grade-based evaluation in education hinders students' creativity, confidence and independent thinking, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said.

He made the remarks as chief guest at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a four-storey academic building at Nolchira Secondary School in Gournadi upazila, Barishal, on Saturday morning, July 11.

The minister said such grading systems create a mental prison, whereas true education should foster free thinking where every student gets equal opportunity to develop their abilities and potential.

He said schools are lighthouses of knowledge and teachers are the bearers of that light. Education should focus not only on textbooks but also on developing human values, ethics and a sense of responsibility. He called on teachers and parents to work together to inspire students with good education and patriotism.

The minister also emphasised the importance of sports alongside studies, saying that sports help build physical fitness, mental development, discipline, leadership and teamwork.

The event was chaired by school head teacher Md Nurul Alam, with local government officials, teachers, students and parents in attendance.
