Fisherman found shot dead in Padma River

A fisherman named Sahabul Islam, 45, was shot dead by miscreants while fishing in the Padma River in Lalpur, Natore. His body was recovered from the Padma River on Tuesday afternoon (June 16).

The deceased Sahabul Islam is a resident of Sara Gopalpur village in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna district and is the son of Md. Yunus Pramanik and Sahara Banu.

According to police and local sources, on the night of June 15, Sahabul Islam and Md. Rabiul Islam, 37, were fishing in a shallow engine-powered boat on the banks of the Padma River in the 'Riter Char' area of ​​Lalpur Police Station. At that time, 5-6 unidentified armed men who came from the char area on motorcycles positioned themselves near the river bank and opened fire at the boat indiscriminately.

Sahabul's upper right shoulder was injured in the gunfire. Rabiul Islam, who was with him, jumped into the Padma in panic to save his life and swam to safety. However, he suffered minor injuries to his body and both hands. Rabiul said he did not recognize any of the attackers.

Police said a body and a black shallow-engine boat were recovered from the scene. No one has been detained or arrested in the incident so far.

Lalpur Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam said legal proceedings are ongoing and investigations are continuing to unravel the mystery of the murder.
