Fisherman missing after falling from trawler in Bay of Bengal

A fisherman named Md Shahin (27) has gone missing after falling from a fishing trawler into the Bay of Bengal at the mouth of the Baleshwar river in Patharghata, Barguna. It is believed that he fell into the sea at some point on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, when the other fishermen began hauling in the nets, they did not find Shahin and started searching for him. Despite searching inside and around the trawler, no trace of him was found. He could not be rescued until the afternoon.

Shahin is the son of Alam Mia of Bhaijora area in Shapleza union of Mathbaria upazila, Pirojpur. He worked as a fisherman on the FB Mayer Doa trawler, owned by Ful Mia of South Char Duani area in Char Duani union of Patharghata upazila, Barguna.

According to the trawler owner and other fishermen, a total of 10 fishermen were on the trawler. On Monday night, they set their nets at the mouth of the Bay of Bengal and fell asleep on the trawler. When everyone was called in the morning to haul the nets, Shahin could not be found. Later, after searching inside and around the trawler without success, it is believed that he fell into the sea at some point during the night.

Trawler owner and skipper Ful Mia said everyone fell asleep after setting the nets at night. Shahin was not found in the morning, so it is assumed he fell into the sea at some point during the night.

Shahin's relatives said they have not been able to contact him since he went missing. They are waiting with hope for Shahin to be rescued alive. They have demanded a swift rescue operation to find him.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Fishermen's Trawler Owners' Association, said incidents of fishermen going missing while fishing in the Bay of Bengal are not new. They have received news of Shahin's disappearance and are looking into the matter.

Patharghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Alim said they have learned about the fisherman's disappearance. As Shahin's home is in Mathbaria upazila, they are making inquiries about the matter.
