Fisherman's body found in Meghna two days after being taken from home, one held

Police have recovered the body of a fisherman named Nasir Mia (35) from the Meghna River in Bajitpur, Kishoreganj, two days after he was taken from his home on the pretext of fishing. One person named Bappi (22) has been detained in connection with the incident. The victim's family has claimed it was a pre-planned murder.

The body was recovered floating in the Meghna River adjacent to the Kazipara graveyard in Maichchar Union of the upazila on Sunday (July 26) morning.

The deceased, Nasir Mia, was the son of late Golap Mia of Kheterhati village in Dillalpur Union. He was a fisherman by profession and the younger brother of Bachir Mia, general secretary of the Dillalpur Union Jubo Dal.

According to local sources, on Friday evening, while Nasir Mia was having dinner at home, Dayal Mia of the same village and Bappi of Khelahati village took him away on the pretext of fishing. They went to the river around 11:30pm. The next morning, Dayal and Bappi returned, but Nasir Mia did not come back.

Based on the family's complaint, Bappi was detained on Saturday and interrogated. He claimed that Nasir Mia had drowned in the river, according to relatives. Locals searched the area he pointed out but found no body. He was then handed over to police.

On Sunday morning, local fishermen spotted a body floating in the Meghna River and informed police. The body was recovered and identified by family members as Nasir Mia.

The victim's wife, Jannat, alleged that her husband was taken from home on the pretext of fishing and murdered. She demanded exemplary punishment for those involved.

Bajitpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) S M Shahidullah said the body has been sent to Kishoreganj Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. The detained Bappi is being interrogated, and operations are underway to arrest the absconding Dayal Mia and others involved.
