A fisherman in Charghat, Rajshahi, narrowly escaped a major disaster after bringing home what he thought was a treasure but turned out to be a live bomb caught in his fishing net in the Padma River. His son's suspicion led to a bomb disposal unit safely defusing the device through a controlled explosion.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, July 15, in the Raotha-Pirojpur area of the upazila.

According to local sources, fisherman Saidar Rahman was fishing in the Padma River using a seine net. While lifting the net, he found a heavy metallic object instead of fish. Believing it to be something valuable or a hidden treasure, he took it home.

When his son Sabbir Rahman started cleaning the object, he took a photo and searched online. Suspecting it might be a bomb or explosive device, he called the national emergency service 999.

Upon receiving the information, Charghat Model Police and BGB members from the Mirganj BOP arrived at the scene and recovered the object. To avoid potential risk, they kept it in a bucket of water and secured the area. The bomb disposal unit later defused the bomb through a controlled explosion.

Fisherman Saidar Rahman said, "Initially I thought it was some treasure found in the river. Later, when my son became suspicious, we informed the police. By the grace of Allah, we were saved from a major accident."

Charghat Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nasir Uddin Tuhin said the bomb disposal unit was called after safely securing the recovered object. "They defused it through a controlled explosion. We will be able to confirm what type of bomb it was after receiving the experts' report," he added.
