Five arrested in Cumilla rape case, including prime accused

Cumilla district police have arrested five people in connection with the rape of a migrant worker’s wife in Muradnagar upazila. Among them is the prime suspect, Fazar Ali Fazar. The remaining four were taken into custody for allegedly filming the victim and sharing the video on social media.


Fazar Ali was arrested around 5.00am on Sunday (June 29) from Sayedabad in Dhaka. He is the son of Shahid Mia of Bahechar (Purbo Para) village in Muradnagar. The others arrested include Suman, son of Abdul Hannan from the same village; Ramjan, son of Zafar Ali; Md. Arif, son of Md. Alam; and Md. Anik, son of Talem Hossain.

According to the statement, the incident took place on the night of June 26 in Ramchandrapur Pachkitta village of Muradnagar. Fazar Ali allegedly entered the victim’s father’s house and raped her. Locals detained and assaulted him at the scene, but he managed to escape while injured. Shortly after, several individuals recorded a video of the victim and shared it on social media platforms.


Upon receiving the report, Muradnagar police responded promptly and took legal action. Based on a written complaint by the victim, a case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Muradnagar Police Station.


The victim filed the case on Friday afternoon (June 27). Her husband is currently working in Dubai.


According to the case details and her statement, she had come to her father’s home with her children about 15 days earlier. Around 10:00pm on Thursday, Fazar Ali (38) came to the house and asked her to open the door. When she refused, he broke in and raped her.


Cumilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed Khan said, "The prime accused in the rape case, Fozor Ali, was arrested in an injured condition and is currently receiving medical treatment. Four others involved in circulating the video were arrested from different parts of Cumilla. Legal action will be taken against them under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act."
