Joint forces have arrested five people in connection with the brutal assault of a 75-year-old woman in Ramchandrapur village of Santhia upazila, Pabna.

A video, widely circulated on Facebook, shows the elderly woman, Kanchan Khatun, being thrown to the ground and beaten by her daughter-in-law Sonali Khatun. Her son, Nazrul Islam, is later seen strangling her and slamming her to the floor.

The footage triggered a wave of public anger and condemnation on social media.

Following the video's circulation, a joint team of Santhia police and army personnel arrested five individuals — Nazrul Islam, Sonali Khatun, Md Tipu, Md Minar Hossain, and Murshida Khatun — from their residence on Saturday evening (August 30).

A case has been filed at Santhia Police Station by the victim’s other son, Fazlul Haque.

Santhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Riju Tamanna said the police responded immediately after the video surfaced. As locals attempted to block the arrests, army personnel were deployed to assist and restore order.

Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Santhia Police Station, said, "Five people, including the son and daughter-in-law, have been arrested in this case."

"Preparations are underway to take further action on the matter," he added.
