Five people have been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in connection with the robbery of Tk 1.21 crore belonging to DL Petrol Pump in Uttara.

The money was being taken to a bank for deposit when a group of robbers intercepted the vehicle and fled with the cash, police said.

In a statement issued Friday night (August 15), the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the arrests were made during a special operation launched as part of an investigation into the robbery. Firearms, ammunition, cash and equipment allegedly used in the crime were recovered from the suspects.

Police have not yet disclosed the identities of those arrested. The DMP said details of the arrests, the suspects’ alleged roles and the recovered evidence will be disclosed at a press briefing on Saturday.

According to police, the robbery took place on August 9 when a vehicle carrying Tk 1,21,25,000 from the DL Petrol Pump was heading to a bank in Uttara. The vehicle was intercepted by a group of assailants travelling on three motorcycles.

The attackers allegedly assaulted the occupants with sharp weapons, snatched a bag containing the money and fled the scene.

A case was filed with Airport Police Station following the incident. The DB and other law enforcement units subsequently launched an investigation, using technological and intelligence-based information to identify the suspects.

Police said the weapons, ammunition, cash and other items recovered from the five suspects are being examined as potential evidence in the robbery case. Further details, including the amount of cash recovered and whether other people were involved, are expected to emerge at Saturday’s briefing.
