Five farmers killed by lightning in Sunamganj
Five farmers have been tragically killed by lightning strikes while cutting paddy in different haors across Sunamganj district on Saturday afternoon, April 18. The incidents occurred in Tahirpur, Jamalganj, Dharmapasha and Derai upazilas.
The deceased have been identified as Abul Kalem, 25, of Tahirpur upazila; Nazmul Hossain, 26, of Jamalganj upazila; Habibur Rahman, 24, and Rohmot Ullah, 13, of Dharmapasha upazila; and Liton Mia, 38, of Derai upazila.
According to local sources, sudden storms and rain began around noon while farmers were cutting paddy in the haors. In Tahirpur upazila's Matian haor, Abul Kalem was critically injured by a lightning strike. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead. Tahirpur Police Station OC Aminul Islam confirmed the matter.
In Jamalganj upazila's Pagnar haor, Nazmul Hossain was killed by lightning while cutting paddy. Another person was injured in the incident, according to Jamalganj Police Station OC Bande Ali.
In Dharmapasha upazila, two separate lightning incidents killed Habibur Rahman and Rohmot Ullah. Habibur Rahman was a second-year degree student of Badshaganj Degree College. Dharmapasha Police Station OC Mohammad Shahed Ullah said the bodies were handed over to families after legal formalities.
In Derai upazila's Kaliagota (Atra) haor, Liton Mia was critically injured by lightning while cutting paddy. Locals took him to Derai Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. Residential Medical Officer Dr Prashanta Das Talukdar confirmed the matter.
