Five get life term in Mymensingh farmer murder case
A court has sentenced five people to life imprisonment for the murder of farmer Hobibur Rahman following a land dispute in Haluaghat, Mymensingh. Each was also fined Tk 100,000, with an additional year's imprisonment if the fine remains unpaid.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Shamsuddin of the First Court in Mymensingh pronounced the verdict on Sunday afternoon, April 12.
The convicts are Shukkur Ali, 54; Amir Ali, 43; Zmir Ali, 41; Hatem Ali, 39; and Harej Ali, 33. They are all residents of Mokamia village in Haluaghat upazila.
According to case documents, on October 14, 2012, a dispute arose between two groups over cutting paddy from a land plot in Mokamia village. Following the dispute, farmer Hobibur Rahman was attacked with sharp weapons and beaten. He was critically injured and later died under treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The victim's sister, Nurunnahar, filed a case against 25 people at Haluaghat Police Station on October 16, 2012. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court on September 7, 2013.
Following a lengthy judicial process, the court delivered its verdict after recording the testimony of 15 witnesses. Twenty accused were acquitted, and five were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Court Inspector P S M Mostasinur Rahman said the convicts have been sent to jail.
