Five killed as car crashes into parked-truck on Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway

At least five people were killed and two children injured after a private car slammed into the rear of a parked-truck on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur.

The fatal accident took place around 4:00am in the Maligram area of the expressway early Tuesday (June 2), police and fire service officials said.

The deceased were identified as Nurjahan, 50, wife of Shahidul Islam of Ujjalpur village in Jashore's Jhikargachha upazila; her son Arif Islam, 24; Ayesha Begum, 28, wife of Ilias Hossain of the same village; Rakib, 18; and the 25-year-old driver of the private car, whose identity could not be immediately confirmed.

Two children — Ashraful Hossain, 7, and Tasfia, 3 — sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to hospital for treatment.

According to highway police, the private car was travelling from Dhaka to Jashore when it crashed into the back of a gas-cylinder-laden truck parked on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the vehicle became wedged underneath the truck, leaving it completely mangled.

Four occupants, including the driver, died at the scene. Rakib later succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

Fire Service officials said rescue teams rushed to the scene shortly after receiving information about the crash. The driver was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be extricated using specialized cutting equipment.

“The car was crushed beneath the truck, trapping the driver inside. Firefighters had to cut through the twisted metal to recover the body,” said Abu Jafar, manager of Bhanga Fire Service Station.

Confirming the incident, Shibchar Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said both vehicles had been seized as part of the investigation. Authorities are working to confirm the identity of the deceased driver and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
