Five killed as dump truck runs over van in Naogaon

At least five people were killed after a dump truck ran over a passenger van in Naogaon’s Mahadebpur upazila.

The accident took place around 4:30am in the Pathakathi area on Saturday (January 31), police and hospital officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Bipul Pahan, 25, and Sanju Rao, 45, both residents of Nurpur area of the upazila. The identities of the remaining three individuals could not be confirmed immediately.

Mahadebpur Upazila Health Complex Resident Medical Officer Dr. Imrul Kayes confirmed the deaths.

According to Abul Kasem, acting station officer of Mahadebpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, the dump truck was travelling from Mahadebpur towards Patnitala when the driver lost control and hit the van, crushing it.

Two passengers died on the spot, while three others were rescued in critical condition and taken to the Mahadebpur Upazila Health Complex. They were declared dead shortly after arrival, Dr Kayes said.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, officials added.
