Five shot in Noakhali while heading to pre-wedding ceremony

Five people, including a cameraman of an event management company, were injured in indiscriminate firing by miscreants in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. One of the injured is in critical condition and has been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment .

The incident occurred around 11pm on Monday, August 17, in the Gazitola area of Moushakpur village under Alaiyapur Union in the upazila.

The injured are Nazrul Islam Shanto, Maruf Ahammed, Jasim Uddin, Sakib Hossain and Bablu. They are undergoing treatment at Noakhali General Hospital.

Nazrul Islam Shanto, one of the injured, said they were travelling to cover a pre-wedding ceremony with several women on three motorcycles and two CNG-run auto-rickshaws. At that time, miscreants opened fire from behind, targeting their motorcycles. They fell off the motorcycles onto the road, and five of them sustained gunshot wounds to their heads, hands and backs.

He also identified two of the attackers as local residents Harun and Picchi Riyad.

Dr Rajib Ahmed Chowdhury, Resident Medical Officer of Noakhali General Hospital, said five people have so far arrived at the emergency department with bullet injuries. One of them has been referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment, while the others remain hospitalised.

Begumganj Model Police Station ASI Masud Rana said two bullet-hit youths came to the police station around midnight and were advised to go to the hospital for treatment. Several police teams have visited the scene and the hospital to see the injured after receiving news of the firing.
