Flood death toll rises to 39, nearly 9.3 lakh people suffering in Ctg Division
The death toll from flash floods and rain-triggered landslides in Bangladesh's Chattogram Division has risen to 39, while nearly 928,000 people have been affected across five districts as relentless monsoon rains continue to inundate vast areas and disrupt normal life.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Cox's Bazar recorded 23 deaths, including 13 Rohingya refugees, followed by Chattogram (8), Bandarban (6) and Rangamati (2).
The worst-hit areas in Chattogram district include Satkania, Banshkhali, Fatikchhari, Raozan, Hathazari, Mirsharai and Anwara, where widespread flooding has submerged homes, roads and cropland. In Cox's Bazar, Chakaria and the Matamuhuri basin have suffered the heaviest damage, while flooding has spread across 18 unions and one municipality. In Rangamati, road damage and landslides have stranded people in Sajek Valley, while Bandarban has kept all tourist destinations closed due to persistent flood and landslide risks.
Authorities have also issued a high landslide alert for Khagrachhari.
Beyond the southeast, flooding has spread to Habiganj, affecting Laskarpur, Poil, Lamatashi, Makrampur, Kaliganj, Radhapur, Kamrapur and Danialpur, where embankment breaches and rising river water have inundated large areas. In Bagerhat, prolonged rainfall has triggered waterlogging across low-lying areas and submerged several roads, disrupting transport and daily life.
In Chattogram district alone, heavy rain, hill runoff and landslides have affected 188,648 families across all 16 upazilas, with 176 unions and municipalities inundated. Authorities have opened 673 emergency shelters, providing refuge to 23,853 people.
The government has allocated 700 tonnes of rice and Tk 600 million for relief efforts. So far, 300 tonnes of rice, Tk 430 million, 22,250 dry food packages and 18,330 cooked meal packets have been distributed, while additional relief supplies remain in reserve.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded 154 mm of rainfall in Chattogram in the 24 hours until 3:00pm Friday (July 10) and warned that heavy rainfall may continue through July 12. Local Warning Signal No. 3 remains in force at Chattogram seaport.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to intensify rescue and relief operations in the flood-ravaged regions. His Press Secretary, Saleh Shibly, said the prime minister is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining regular communication with district administrations to ensure a coordinated emergency response.
