Flood risk looms over five districts in next 24–48 hours

Continuous heavy rainfall and upstream runoff have caused water levels in several rivers across Bangladesh to rise, prompting flood warnings for parts of the country. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has cautioned that flash or short-term flooding could occur in five districts within the next 24 to 48 hours.

According to the forecast, water levels in several rivers flowing through Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, and Kurigram may rise above the danger level, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.

The FFWC reported that over the past 24 hours, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur Division remained stable. However, these rivers are expected to rise over the next three days, with several monitoring points likely to cross the danger level within the next 24 to 48 hours. As a result, flash or short-duration flooding may affect low-lying riverside areas in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, and Kurigram.

Meanwhile, in the country's northeast, the Surma River recorded a rise in water level over the past 24 hours, while the Kushiyara River remained stable. Both rivers are expected to continue rising during the next three days.

The forecast warns that water levels at several points along the Surma and Kushiyara rivers could exceed the danger level within the next 48 hours. This may trigger short-term flooding in low-lying riverside areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts. However, authorities expect flood conditions in areas already affected to remain largely stable.
