Continuous heavy rainfall and upstream hill torrents from India’s Meghalaya region have pushed water levels in three rivers of Sherpur above the danger mark, raising flood concerns across low-lying areas of the district.

According to the Sherpur Water Development Board (WDB), data recorded at 9:00am on Saturday (June 13) showed that the Chellakhali River was flowing 4 centimetres above the danger level. The Someshwari and Maharashi rivers have also crossed their respective danger thresholds.

While the Bhogai River remains below the danger level at the Nakugaon point by 338 centimetres and at the Nalitabari point by 328 centimetres, officials noted that water levels are continuing to rise steadily.

Local residents reported that rising hill water has already inundated areas in Jhenaigati upazila, including the town market, with water levels increasing further. Several roads, including the border road in Nalitabari, were submerged earlier this week due to persistent heavy rainfall and runoff.

Over the past 24 hours, significant rainfall was recorded across the district, including 180 mm at Nakugaon, 35 mm at Nalitabari, and 30 mm at Sherpur point. Water levels in parts of the Maharashi River are now close to overflowing embankments, with reports of soil erosion near protective structures, heightening concerns among locals.

Sherpur WDB Executive Engineer Sudipto Chowdhury said the situation is being closely monitored and expressed hope that water levels would recede once rainfall decreases.

“Up to now, there are no reports of embankment breaches. However, river levels are near or above danger points in several locations. We are monitoring the situation continuously and will take immediate action if needed,” he said.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as the flood situation remains dynamic amid ongoing rainfall and upstream water flow.
