Renowned folk singer and Ekushey Padak awardee Farida Parveen has been put on life support again as her health deteriorated on Wednesday evening (September 10).

Her husband, noted flutist Gazi Abdul Hakim, confirmed the development, saying she has been battling severe lung and kidney complications.

“Her condition today is worse than the past two days. Her body is very weak. We urge everyone to pray for her recovery,” he said.

Farida Parveen, who has long suffered from kidney disease requiring dialysis twice a week, was admitted to Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali on September 2 after her condition worsened following a dialysis session. She has since been under intensive care.

Dr. Ashish Kumar Chakraborty, Managing Director of the hospital, said her blood pressure has dropped alarmingly while infection and kidney complications have intensified. “Her overall condition remains critical,” he added.

Farida Parveen began her musical career with Nazrul Sangeet at Rajshahi Betar in 1968 before gaining nationwide recognition as a folk singer in the 1970s. Over her illustrious career, she has received the Ekushey Padak (1987), the National Film Award (1993), and Japan’s Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize (2008). She also founded Achin Pakhi School, a music school for children.
