Folk singer Mujib Pardeshi sent to jail in cheque dishonour case

Folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi has been sent to jail after appearing before a court in connection with a cheque dishonour case.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order on Tuesday.

According to the case documents, Idris Ali Biswas filed the case against the artist in a Magura court in 2022, alleging the dishonour of a cheque worth Tk1 million.

On 15 March 2023, Magura's Second Joint District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Anwar Sadat sentenced Mujib Pardeshi to one year's rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk1 million, equivalent to the value of the dishonoured cheque.

As he remained absconding after the verdict, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.

Acting on that warrant, Uttara West Police Station arrested Mujib Pardeshi in the capital on Monday. He was produced before the Dhaka court on Tuesday, where police sought an order to keep him in custody.

Following the hearing, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
SI Helal Uddin of the prosecution said no lawyer appeared on behalf of Mujib Pardeshi during the hearing.

Meanwhile, counsel for the complainant, Shafiqul Islam, opposed bail, arguing that the accused had remained absconding for a long period despite being aware of the case, and that granting him bail could prejudice the complainant.

Mujib Pardeshi's real name is Mujibur Rahman Molla. He rose to prominence in the 1980s through his performances of Bengali folk songs and later established himself as a composer and music director.
