Food cart worker held over sexual harassment of student at CU railway station

Students have handed over a food cart worker to police for allegedly sexually harassing a student while boarding a shuttle train at the Chattogram University (CU) railway station. Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed by the victim.

The incident took place at the university railway station on Tuesday (July 14) afternoon.

Accused Md. Shahin Sheikh is a resident of Lohagara upazila of Narail. He was working at the ‘Cargo Cafe’ food cart located at the university station.

According to eyewitnesses and university sources, a first-year undergraduate student was boarding a shuttle train at 4:40 pm. At that time, it was alleged that the accused made unwanted physical contact with her and sexually harassed her.

Seeing the incident, the students present immediately captured Shahin Sheikh. Later, upon receiving the information, members of the university's proctoral body went to the spot and brought the situation under control and took the accused and the victim to the university security office.

There, in the presence of university proctor Professor Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy and assistant proctors, the statements of both sides were heard. With the consent of the victim, the accused was handed over to the Railway Police Station around 10 pm. Later, the student filed a case against him.

University proctor Professor Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy said that if the allegations are proven, discussions have been held with the Railway Police to ensure exemplary punishment for the accused. The university administration will provide all possible cooperation to ensure a fair investigation and justice.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chittagong Railway Police Station Md. Nurul Huda said that a case was filed immediately after the incident. The accused has been sent to court and the investigation of the case is underway.
