Foreign loan of Tk 8,626 crore repaid in two months

Bangladesh has repaid foreign loan of about $70 crore in the first two months of the current 2026-27 fiscal year. In July and August the country has repaid a total of $69 crore 89 lakh 20 thousand, which is about Tk 8,626 crore in Bangladeshi currency.

This information has come up in the updated report published by Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Sunday. It shows that in the same period of the previous fiscal year foreign loan of $66 crore 71 lakh 10 thousand or about Tk 8,131 crore was repaid. That means loan repayment has increased by $3 crore 18 lakh 10 thousand in one year.

According to the report, the major portion of the amount repaid in July-August has gone for repayment of principal loan instalment. In this sector Bangladesh has given $51 crore 60 lakh 40 thousand, the amount of which is about Tk 6,369 crore in Bangladeshi currency.

On the other hand, $18 crore 28 lakh 80 thousand has been repaid as interest of foreign loan in the first two months. The amount of this is about Tk 2,257 crore in Bangladeshi currency.

Meanwhile, against the loan repayment the amount of loan Bangladesh has received from foreign development partners in the first two months of the current fiscal year is comparatively less. In July and August foreign loan disbursement for various projects has been $29 crore 45 lakh 60 thousand.

In the same period Bangladesh has received commitment of new foreign loan of $24 crore. In the same period of the previous fiscal year the amount of new loan commitment was $24 crore 38 lakh. That means new loan commitment has also decreased slightly in one year.
