Former Awami League MP's body arrives in Bangladesh from India

The body of former Tangail-8 MP and District unit Awami League General Secretary Joaherul Islam Joaher, who died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata of West Bengal, has arrived in Bangladesh.

Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Sakhawat Hossain said that the ambulance carrying his body entered Bangladesh through the Benapole Land Port Immigration Checkpost in Sharsha Upazila of Jashore around 9 pm on Sunday (March 01).

His wife Rawshan Ara Khan, daughter Zakia Islam and daughter's husband Md. Jamil Hasan returned to Bangladesh from India with body. After completing the procedures at Benapole Immigration, they left for Tangail with the body. Family sources said that he will be buried in his native village.

Joaherul Islam died at a private hospital in Kolkata around 10:30 pm on Friday. He was 70.

Joaherul Islam fled to India after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5, 2024. He was suffering from various physical complications due to old age. When his physical condition deteriorated there, he was admitted to the Phoenix Medical Center in the Dum Dum area of ​​Kolkata. He was under treatment at the hospital for more than a week. He was kept on life support for the last six days. According to doctors, he died due to multi-organ failure.

He was elected as a member of parliament from Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency in the 11th National Parliament elections. He was elected as VP from the Chhatra League-nominated panel in the Kortia Government Sa'dat College Students' Parliament election and served for two terms. He was better known as 'VP Joaher' to local leaders and activists.
