Former Bauphal Mayor Ziaul Haque Jewel arrested in Dhaka

Former Bauphal municipal mayor and Patuakhali district Awami League Joint General Secretary Ziaul Haque Jewel was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital’s Gulshan area.

A DB team arrested Jewel during a raid on a residence in Baridhara DOHS at around 11:30pm on Wednesday (September 30), according to police sources. He was later taken to the DB office on Minto Road.

A police official said Jewel has arrest warrants in several cases and had remained in hiding since August 5, 2024. Acting on intelligence information, detectives traced his location in Baridhara DOHS and subsequently conducted the operation.

The DB has not yet issued an official statement regarding the arrest.

Jewel served as mayor of Bauphal municipality and was elected to the post multiple times. His family members described him as a “clean” politician and said they were surprised by his arrest.

Police have yet to disclose details of the cases in which the warrants were issued or outline the next legal steps following his arrest.

Court records also show that an arrest warrant had previously been issued against Jewel in a murder case in Patuakhali.
