Former BB spokesperson Mezbaul Haque resigns
Md. Mezbaul Haque, former spokesperson and executive director of Bangladesh Bank, has resigned amid ongoing pressure following the fall of the Awami League government. He submitted his resignation on Tuesday, citing personal reasons, according to official sources.
This marks the first resignation of a regular (non-contractual) official from the central bank since the political shift on August 5 last year, when the government led by Sheikh Hasina was ousted following a mass uprising. In the immediate aftermath, the central bank's governor, two deputy governors, the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), and a policy advisor were all compelled to resign. All were serving on contractual appointments.
Mezbaul Haque was promoted to executive director in December 2022, the same day he was appointed as the central bank's spokesperson. Prior to that, he had served for an extended period as head of the Payment Systems Department.
Known for his close ties to Sajeeb Wazed Joy—son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her advisor on ICT—Haque was transferred from the bank’s head office to its Rajshahi regional office following the political transition.
Haque began his career at Bangladesh Bank in 1993 as an assistant director. He holds an MSc in Statistics from Jahangirnagar University and an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at the University of Dhaka.
