Former Boalkhali Upazila chairman and Awami League leader Zahedul Hoque has been arrested by the Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police.

He was arrested from the airport area of ​​the capital on Tuesday afternoon.

Zahedul is the former chairman of Boalkhali Upazila Parishad and a member of the advisory board of the Chattogran South District Awami League. He is also a member of the Chittagong Chambers of Commerce, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and a director of Standard Bank.

Police said that Awami League leader Zahedul is facing multiple cases, including bank fraud, political influence and land grabbing charges. Several cases were filed against him in connection with the attack on students and the public during the July mass uprising.

Earlier on July 4 last year, leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Jatiya Jubo Shakti and NCP took a stand in front of the main gates of the Chattogram Club in the city demanding Zahedul's arrest. They alleged that Zahedul was an accused in several murder cases during the 'July Movement'. His son's wedding ceremony was going on at the club that day. When the situation was brought under control with the intervention of the police, he went abroad the next day. However, he recently returned to the country.

Police said that Zahedul Hoque is an accused in several cases filed with Baklia and Khulshi police stations in Chattogram city. arrest warrant against him has also been issued in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station in the capital. In addition, there are cases against him in courts in Dhaka and Chattogram.
