Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K. M. Nurul Huda has been placed on a four-day remand by a Dhaka court in connection with a sedition case. The case, filed at Sher-e-Bangla Police Station, accuses Huda of abusing his authority to stage a farcical election.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid issued the remand order on Friday (June 27) following a hearing.

Earlier the police requested an additional 10-day remand for former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda for further interrogation. The request was submitted on Friday by Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarkar of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, following the completion of Huda’s initial four-day remand.

According to SI Rafiqul Islam of the station’s prosecution division, the remand hearing is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court. Nurul Huda was brought to court shortly after 2:30 PM for the hearing.

On Monday, the police had sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted only four days at that time.

Nurul Huda was detained last Sunday evening in the capital’s Uttara area. Local residents apprehended him and handed him over to law enforcement. Footage circulated on social media shows Huda, dressed in a lungi, being subjected to public humiliation, including having a garland of shoes placed around his neck by an agitated crowd.

That same morning, the BNP filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against the Election Commissions led by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda, and Kazi Habibul Awal — who oversaw the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections respectively. The case was filed by Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee. A total of 24 individuals, including the three former CECs, were named as accused.

As part of the same investigation, former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested on Wednesday. The court granted a three-day remand for him on Thursday, although police had requested 10 days.
