Former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque put on 7-day remand

A Dhaka court has approved a seven-day remand for former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque in a corruption and forgery case filed at Shahbagh Police Station.
The case includes charges of corruption, issuing biased and illegal verdicts, and forgery. The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Shanawullah passed the order on Wednesday.
During the hearing, Inspector Khalek Mia, the investigating officer of Shahbagh Police Station, requested a 10-day remand for Khairul Haque. The prosecution, represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon, supported the application. After considering the arguments, the court granted a seven-day remand.
Khairul Haque was arrested early morning on July 24 from his residence in Dhanmondi by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He was later sent to jail by the court in connection with a murder case involving teenager Abdul Kaiyum Ahad of Jatrabari Police Station, related to an anti-discrimination movement.
The case was filed last year on August 27 by Supreme Court lawyer Md Mujahidul Islam at Shahbagh Police Station. Charges have been framed under sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code.
According to the allegations, Justice Khairul was influenced by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and, driven by the desire for a favorable post-retirement position, unlawfully altered a brief order dated May 10, 2011. He subsequently issued a full verdict in the appeal case on September 16, 2012, with the intention of pleasing the former Prime Minister.
