Former Home Minister Mahmudul Hasan dies
Former home minister and BNP vice-chairman, former Tangail-5 Sadar MP Mahmudul Hasan, 90, has died.
He passed away at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, December 31, at his residence in Gulshan after suffering cardiac arrest. He is survived by a son, a daughter and numerous well-wishers.
His funeral prayers will be held after Zuhr on Thursday at the Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School ground in Tangail town.
Mahmudul Hasan was born on March 1, 1936, in Makorkol village of Tangail Sadar upazila. He completed a bachelor’s degree in science in 1956 and later obtained an engineering degree. On June 13, 1959, he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army and joined the engineering corps. During his military career, he held several important positions and played an active role in the Akhnoor sector of Kashmir during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. He later retired from the Bangladesh Army as a major general.
During the rule of president Ershad, Mahmudul Hasan served as home minister. In his political career, he was first elected to parliament in 1988 as a Jatiya Party candidate. He was later elected in 1996 and 2001 from the BNP and again became an MP in a 2012 by-election.
